The social network phenomenon characterized by Facebook and MySpace is maturing into specialist markets, as users become frustrated at their lack of focus. Users are becoming more discerning and expect to easily find people with a genuine shared interest. This behavior is also demonstrated by users belonging to more than one social network: 64% of Facebook members also belong to MySpace; Bebo, Hi5 and Friendster all share more than 49% of their members with MySpace.
By 2011 the number of US people visiting social networks at least once a month is set to increase almost 50% to 85m from 57m, representing 49% of all US online adults [source: eMarketeer]. In 2008 10% of the projected $2.1bn advertising spend on social networks is destined to go towards niche networks as marketers recognize improved ROI through targeted social channels.
